Opinion: Lana Del Rey was robbed of a verse

November 3, 2022

“Snow On The Beach” is the title of one of Taylor Swift’s songs featuring Lana Del Rey on her new album “Midnights”. The album came out on October 21, 2022.

The song quickly grew in popularity as many Lana Del Rey and Taylor Swift fans were excited to see such great artists working together on a song. Both singers’ songs are about love and heartbreak, making many feel a sense of relatability, including myself.

Before the song came out, I was told that this song would be a mix of the song “Style” and “Pretty When You Cry”. This gave me, even more, hope for an amazing song.

As someone who is a Lana Dey Rey and Taylor Swift fan, I was counting down the minutes until I could listen to this new song. There was also a rumor going around that Lana was just the background vocals, but I, among many other fans, refused to believe it.

Once the song came out, I quickly started listening to it, waiting for Lana Del Rey’s part to come, feeling more disappointed as the song went on. Once the song ended, I realized the terrible rumors were true. I felt upset that the song was not a duet but merely contained background vocals of Lana Del Rey.

I realized I was not alone in this as I heard others express their disappointment through conversations and social media. I later learned that Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey wrote the song together and agreed to make it that way.

After some time, I decided to give the song another listen and I truly saw the beauty in it. I loved the idea of the song being about two people falling in love at the same time. Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey’s voices harmonizing together sounded truly angelic and made the message of the song even more meaningful.

Although I do wish I could have heard more from Lana Del Rey, I do see why the choice of her being the background vocals was made. “Snow On The Beach” is growing even larger in popularity with over 24 million streams already. This song continues to grow on me, becoming one of my favorite songs yet.
