Review: Stevie Nicks and Billy Joel put on an incredible performance at SoFi Stadium
March 14, 2023
As an enthusiast of rock music, specifically from the ’70s, this iconic night was one for the books. Legends, Stevie Nicks and Billy Joel came together for an unforgettable performance at the SoFi Stadium. Stevie Nicks has a tour lined up for 2023 and for many of her shows, Billy Joel will join her. March 10 was their opening night and I was fortunate enough to attend.
I am a huge Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks fan so the moment this tour was announced I knew I had to go and thought it to be even better that Billy Joel would join her. Who wouldn’t want to see these two legends perform together? It was something I knew I had to witness.
I attended the show with my mom, and upon arrival, we immediately went to buy some merchandise. I bought a vibrant-colored T-shirt in support of my love for Stevie Nicks. The prices were typical for concert merchandise and figured that it was worth the money.
The tickets were reasonably priced considering that it was a two-in deal. Although I sat in the 500’s section, it was still a great seat, and I was able to have an amazing view of the show. It was a rainy night in LA, and even though the stadium was covered, there was still water that seeped through, and throughout the night we were all rained on, but that definitely did not stop us from having the time of our lives.
It was just after 7 pm and the lights finally dimmed and out came Stevie Nicks. She performed many songs–her own and also some from Fleetwood Mac. One of the first songs she sang was “Dreams.” Nicks began to perform “Stop Draggin ‘My Heart Around” and Billy Joel came out to surprise her and the crowd so he could join her in the song. Everyone went wild and was so excited to see the two perform together.
Nicks and Joel had incredible chemistry performing on stage and it was so surreal to see them put on such a memorable performance.
Nicks continued performing and it lasted around two hours. She sang the songs “Edge of Seventeen”, “Bella Donna”, “For What It’s Worth” and even Tom Petty’s, “Free Fallin.”
I was skeptical about Nicks doing her iconic spinning during the show and sure enough, she started spinning and everyone went crazy and were so happy to see her doing something she is so known for. It was honestly remarkable to see it live and just added so much to the experience.
I was also most excited to hear her sing “Rhiannon” and “Landslide” because they are my absolute favorite songs but was unsure if she would sing them because they are songs of hers from Fleetwood Mac. Sure enough, Nicks came back on stage to surprise the audience with a few more songs in which she sang “Rhiannon” and it was an amazing experience.
The last song she performed was “Landslide” which was a beautifully emotional performance of hers not only because of the song’s significance to me but because it was a tribute to her friend and former band member of Fleetwood Mac, Christine McVie. By the end of it, Nicks teared up and everyone was touched by such a heartfelt dedication to someone that is dearly loved and missed.
After an intermission, Billy Joel came out and everyone was ecstatic to see him. He sat by his piano and opened up with his hit song “My Life.” He sang songs like “Innocent Man”, “Only the Good Die Young”, and “Piano Man.” He really sang his heart out during all his songs.
I was most excited to see him perform “Vienna” because it is one of my favorite songs and it was one of the first to be sung. It was such an unforgettable experience to hear it live–it was a thousand times better than hearing it from my headphones.
To surprise the crowd, Nicks came out to do a duet with Joel in “And So It Goes.” The two of them are such a spectacular duo and the times they were together were some of my favorite moments of the concert.
After two hours Joel seemed to have finished his set but like always he came back out to surprise the audience with more songs in which he sang another one of my favorite songs of his, “Uptown Girl.” It was so fun to hear it and it was such a lively time.
Joel said goodbye and the concert was sadly over. I was left with such incredible memories that I will never forget. Seeing one of my favorite singers live (Stevie Nicks) was undeniably a highlight of my year. And also being able to see Billy Joel live really tied the whole experience together.
The two proved that years of performing and age have nothing to interfere with their ability because they put on one of the best performances and anyone who got to see it would most likely agree. The two know how to put on a striking performance. It was so impressive and worth all the money.
As a lover of the 70s, rock, and music, seeing these two legends live was such a special experience.
