Throughout the whole K-12 experience students were told one thing, that they need to go to college. Whether that be a community, private, UC, Ivy etc. its a goal for all students in the US to go to school after high school.
Over the years it has become apparent that college isn’t for everyone. Some people might not be good students, they might not have the time, or they might not have the money. Due to inflation in the US it has caused everything to go up in price.
College has always been expensive because it is an extra step to a chosen profession and knowledge in general. But when the average household income is a little less than $70,000 is it fair to be expected to drop $12,000 on tuition?
Students can get loans and financial aid but with a minimum wage of $16 an hour in California, it’s just demented.
Not only is the price of tuition insane, it’s even going up by up to 6%. But there are so many other problems surrounding going to college.
These professors, the people that went to college to teach something to the younger generations, aren’t being paid a livable wage. Some are getting paid a small amount of $600 a month. They don’t even get the benefits that they deserve. If a teacher can’t make a livable wage, they won’t want to move forward with teaching.
On Monday January 22, 2024, the faculty union of CSU went on strike because they would only be receiving a 5% salary increase when it has been stated that a 12% increase wouldn’t even be sustainable.
The CSU Chancellor, Mildred Garcia, makes over $900,000 when the staff that makes the 23-campus system run can’t afford to live in california.
The dream American education that people come here for doesn’t exist. Someone is always going to have more money than someone else but when education is unaffordable it just becomes unfair.
