It is officially the time when the fake cobwebs start being put up, pumpkins are displayed on the porch, and most importantly, it is time for horror movies.
Horror movies are a staple of a good “spooky” season. The time calls for curling up in bed, eating freshly made popcorn, and getting scared out of your mind while watching some of the most mind-boggling movies.
There are so many spooky movies out there, some shake people to their very core, while others have experience spotting these jumpscares. Either way, they are some very enjoyable movies. When it comes to horror movies, there is a genre for everyone. From paranormal movies to psychological horror, to body horror, there is a scary movie out there for everyone.
The movie in the spotlight today is Carrie!
Directed and released in 1976 by Brian De Palma, the film Carrie is an exciting adaptation of the Stephen King novel of the same name, Carrie, which delves into the story of a lonely teen, Carrie White, and the torment she faces at the hands of her school bullies.
While also dealing with a suffocating religious mother, Carrie isn’t just a normal teenager who gets bullied at her high school for no reason; she also has supernatural powers. She acts in a stranger manner than most individuals, causing the bullying to go on at school.
While there are many scenes that have viewers captivated, there is a particular scene in the movie that the crowd always seems to go wild for, which is the iconic pig blood scene! The scene that is always mentioned, and always recreated; the scene Carrie is most famous for is where she wins prom queen, and as a prank, the popular kids decide to dump a bucket of pig’s blood on her while she accepts the winning crown.
Carrie fan Joelia Lopez says, “My favorite part of the movie Carrie would be the scene after the iconic pig’s blood drop. When her rage finally shows and she pretty much uses her telekinesis as a vengeance against everyone. I think the pig’s blood drop will forever be an iconic scene within cinema, no matter the remake or retelling it will always remain iconic. The suspense, different angles and shots as well as what comes after.”
This scene is the most famous one, being recreated many times, and one of the most well-known examples is in the Netflix show, Wednesday, where Wednesday Addams has red paint dumped on her to mimic the legendary scene.
With an exciting cast consisting of two powerhouse names, John Travolta and Sissy Spacek, Carrie is a movie that is replayed all throughout the Halloween season, every year. The movie is so popular that there was a sequel made, The Rage: Carrie 2 (1999), and a few remakes, Carrie (2002) and Carrie (2013).
Lopez says, “I would recommend the movie to others! It’s an iconic movie and no matter if you’ve never seen it, you of course know what it’s about by the name or simply by the pig’s blood drop. But I prefer the 2013 version with Chloe Grace Moretz.”
There is a lot of love given to the movies, so much so that a few independent theaters such as The Frida Cinema, in Santa Ana, play the movie yearly for fans to rewatch when it is time for scares!
