We don’t think much about the idea of names, well not as much because it’s a simple concept. It doesn’t matter what it is, everything has a name. However, for me personally when we humans name another it brings much more meaning than people give it credit for.
When we think of naming others, people tend to think it’s just something we give, the name can already have a meaning attached to it. The greater insight of how a name becomes more important is because it’s a record of yourself.
Your name will follow you for the rest of your life or what people know you by, even if it’s online or not. Majority of individuals know you by your name, online persona, or even nickname, this ties back to the meaning of names; because they attached this name to you in particular. Yet this idea also goes into how that name gives you a meaning and proof of your existence. Now that we understand my main two points of why names are important, let’s go deeper into this.
Names and memories are deeply tied together. Like Rutishauser said in an article: “A boundary response is kind of like creating a new folder on your computer,” adding new memories will just be like dragging a new document to that folder.
The way to remember them is to have strong connections to such a memory. Generally most of the time it’s linked to events, actions and names being told.
That’s why whenever you have a bad or good experience with someone you remember their name, that means they already engraved their existence to you for some time, probably even forever.
The same logic applies to you reading this. Even if anything happens, the people you bonded, argued, disliked, or loved you are remembered. You already showed you exist even if that existence doesn’t lead to much at the end.
That’s why I find names important and special. They are proof we are alive, records of our stubbornness, selfishness, happiness, and sadness. In a weird way it shows we were even alive in the first place, making as many connections as possible to make sure we are remembered. But that’s all from me, hopefully this helped you appreciate names a little more.
