American Airlines flight 5342 was traveling from Wichita, Kansas to Arlington, Virginia when the plane collided mid-air with a Black Hawk military helicopter on Wednesday night, Jan. 29 at Reagan National Airport.
American Airlines has reported that 60 passengers and 4 crew members were on that plane when the collision occurred. It was confirmed by officials that there were 4 military personnel on the helicopter as well.
“All takeoffs and landing have been halted at DCA. Emergency personnel are responding to an aircraft incident on the airfield,” Reagan Airport said in a statement. “The terminal remains open. Will update”.
On Thursday morning, DC Fire and EMS, alongside with different police and fire departments throughout the Washington Metropolitan Region, are currently calling for “recovery effort” in the Potomac River after working on the rescue mission all night.
“We are at a point where we are switching from a rescue operation to a recovery operation,” DC Fire and EMS Chief John Donnelly said at a press conference Thursday morning. “At this point, we don’t believe there are any survivors from this accident and we have recovered 27 people from the plane and one from the helicopter.”
The U.S. Figure Skating reports that several members of the skating team were a part of Flight 5342. “These athletes, coaches, and family members were returning home from the National Development Camp held in conjunction with the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas”, the organization says.
