In recent days, numerous people across the country have been going to stores (Costco, Walmart, etc.) and are buying all the eggs they can.
Why are they doing this?
A factor that could have played a role in this is the fact that there is a national outbreak of bird flu that has killed dozens of chickens, thus lowering egg production.
When supply of something goes down, demand usually goes up since there’s less of the product; however, like we saw with toilet paper at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was hardly any toilet paper left since everyone was panic buying toilet paper like crazy. This is similar to what is going on with eggs now, and now stores are putting limits on how many eggs a single customer can purchase.
Another factor that played into this is the fact that the tariffs that Donald Trump implemented are going to be effective soon. This will lead to the cost of eggs and other products to go up in price.
Panic buying eggs during the time of a national outbreak that is killing dozens of birds will not help the problem, it will only make it worse since it would make the shortage even worse, driving up prices and there wouldn’t be eggs for anyone else.
Not to mention, what are you going to do with all the eggs? They’re most likely going to go bad in around 3 weeks, and it’s not likely you’d finish an entire bulk egg pack from Costco in 3 weeks, it’ll be a waste of money.
