On Tuesday Feb 11, El Rancho students participated in a walkout to protest the new policies that ICE now has.
Word was spread about the walkout from an Instagram post which quickly gained traction among students. A major reason behind the walk out was to protest a new policy made by President Donald Trump that lets ICE conduct arrests inside schools and other sensitive places.
At approximately 11:00 A.M. Students began to walk out of their classrooms with their classmates forming a march that slowly increased in numbers. The crowd headed to the back of school gates and exited, marching with signs and chanted shouts while walking towards Balfour St, then crossed the Pico Rivera bridge in Rosemead Blvd, then went to march down Washington Blvd.
The protesting crowd was safely escorted by police cars making sure no one was to get hurt. Students held up the Mexican and American flags to show their support for immigrants. Signs and posters were also held up with some that said “Immigrants make America great again,” and megaphones were being used to spread their word. Passing cars noticed the marching crowd and many cheered and honked their car horns.
Another big crowd of students was formed and had walked out the front school gates at approximately 11:40 A.M, and marched towards the Pico Rivera City Hall. This crowd also held signs protesting against ICE, and chanted together in front of city hall.
Many students were proud to peacefully protest and be part of a cause and come together to unite their voices.
