On Feb. 11, it was reported on Duolingo’s X page that the Duolingo bird died in a letter that was shared with X and other social media platforms.
However, on Feb. 24, the account made an announcement stating, “Y’all really think I’d let a cybertruck take me out?” with a video showing the mascot exiting from a coffin in the bed of a pickup truck, ending the video with “Legends never die.”
Later that day, another post was made with the title captioning “Faking my death was the test and you all passed,” showing that the owl was never really dead, but rather faked his own death.
The test was from the Duolingo app itself, to have its learners earn as much XP as possible from learning a language (what the app is used for) to revive the owl.
The X feed also revealed a strategy to have its learners’ work together to revive the bird by earning as much XP as possible to revive the bird.
Although the death was faked, it still shows that its learners’ still cared about the mascot, doing anything to revive their beloved owl.
