Interested in having a zero period for next year’s schedule? Now’s your chance! The Diversity in Literature and Film class still has many spots open during zero period for next school year!
The course includes discussions and examining media outlets that cover social issues such as racism, prejudice, gender, stereotyping, sexuality, and many more. During the class, students will analyze how media throughout the years has shaped society’s perspectives on these topics.
Diversity in Literature and Film teacher Mrs. Mata says, “One of the most important things we see today is understanding that there’s a deep connection between the time of when we are little up until the time we’re adults and how the content we consume, the information we are digesting, it affects how we view ourselves unconsciously without us even thinking about it.”
Throughout the year, students will be able to take a more analytical dive into books such as The Color Purple and The Joy Luck Club. Mata plans to include a new graphic novel titled Stamped for students to visually enjoy reading and breaking apart next year.
Senior and current Ethnic Studies student Emma Torrez says, “I have been introduced to powerful movies that I wouldn’t have known if it wasn’t for this class. Furthermore, the books we’ve read are genuinely entertaining and have been enjoyable.”
Not only that, but students will fill out a digital notebook on their observations of different movies they have viewed in class. Some of these movies include Boyz in Da Hood, The Hate U Give, Get Out, Blackkklansman, and many more.
“My main goal would be for the students to have a critical eye. I want students to be able to look at the world around them and think for themselves. I don’t want to try to convince students to have one opinion, but instead, listen to other people’s opinions and think about what’s real and isn’t and whose stories are not being told and have an open mind”, says Mrs. Mata.
This course can also help students complete their “G” elective credits, Ethnic Studies credits, or even replace any failed English grade you wish to improve before college applications!
There are also many great benefits to having a zero period. You are able to have an open 6th and leave early. You are also able to fit in extra classes if you’d like to have extra classes and get ahead on credits!
Zero period is offered Tuesday-Friday from 7:25-8:25AM, leaving you with no zero period on Mondays. Being at the school early is also a benefit as you can avoid traffic before 1st period begins!
“I believe the class had genuinely educated me more on topics like race, sexuality, and different types of cultures”, Torrez says.
This class is a great way to examine the world in ways that many don’t necessarily get to do every day. Not only that, but students get to talk about it with their fellow peers and have fun while pulling content apart.
