In recent times, there have been conflicts about a TikTok trend going on in France and the United States.
What exactly is going on with this TikTok trend?
This anti-French TikTok trend started with the Lady Gaga song “Bad Romance”. Specifically with the line “I don’t wanna be friends”. The trend replaces the word friends with French, essentially saying “I don’t want to be French”.
The first known TikTok about this trend came from a British TikToker in the United Kingdom.
This trend has become more popular recently with many TikTok users participating in this trend, usually with people in massive events such as a sporting event or national event with their flag being displayed with the caption “I don’t wanna be French” with the Lady Gaga song.
The people of France are furious about this and have started to blame the United States for starting the trend. However, it is to be noted that the first known tiktok of this trend originated in the United Kingdom, not in the United States. Also, the majority of the people participating in this trend are not even American, but rather Europeans (Italians, Germans, the Spanish, Belgians, etc.).
Even though it’s clear the Americans didn’t start nor are participating in the trend, this is not stopping the French media from putting in their news sources that Americans are responsible for this trend as well as the French people making TikToks calling Americans “fat, lazy, and uneducated” for starting this trend (even though they still never started it).
With their news outlets reporting incorrect information, they should reconsider retaking Journalism 101 since they missed learning about defamation and reporting credible information.
