On Thursday, May 1, President Donald J. Trump signed an executive order to cut federal funding for Public Broadcasting Channels, NPR and PBS.
The funding toward these programs is not only affected by his official order, but they are also threatened by Trump’s earlier attempt to dismantle the Department of Education, as part of the funding for PBS and NPR comes from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).
CPB’s content is directly related to the information from the Department of Education, and therefore associated with these news channels.
Trump is cutting the funding for NPR and PBS due to a claim of bias, claiming on his X account, that they are “RADICAL LEFT “MONSTERS'” and spreading “woke propaganda disguised as ‘news.’”
This accusation of prejudice can be seen as hypocritical. He is calling news stations biased against him, but by calling them “monsters”, Trump himself is being severely biased against liberals purely because they lean towards the liberal political party.
While it is not specifically stated that a president cannot be biased, it is important to have a fair and just president to ensure they can effectively lead and uphold their oaths to protect the Constitution. A president should make decisions that improve all of America, not just their preferred political party.
Eliminating one-sided news is significant because it can become prevalent to the point that it spreads misinformation. Therefore, it may be beneficial to cut funding if these news programs are biased, but it also begs the question: Why only these sources?
To some, it may seem that Donald Trump is only defunding these programs because they are intolerant of him. However, information that is reported as indifferent towards republicans is not being threatened because President Donald J. Trump is fine with bias, as long as it is not against him.
