El Rancho High School officials are investigating a serious incident that took place on the morning of Fri. May 16, when a firework was ignited in the boys’ restroom during nutrition. The explosion caused significant damage to the restroom, though fortunately, no students were injured. School operations continued as scheduled, with all classes and activities proceeding as normal.
School administrators made it clear that this kind of behavior is not only dangerous but also illegal under multiple California state laws.
According to California Education Code § 48900(f), it is prohibited to cause or attempt to cause damage to school property. Additionally, California Education Code § 48915(a)(1)(B) mandates expulsion for students found in possession of dangerous objects, including fireworks, on school grounds. California Health and Safety Code § 12680(a) also makes it a crime to discharge dangerous fireworks in a way that could cause injury or public panic.
“This type of activity disrupts the learning environment and threatens the safety of our students and staff,” school officials stated in a message to El Rancho families. The administration is actively investigating the matter and is committed to holding those responsible accountable through appropriate disciplinary and legal action.
