On August 23rd, 2025, at around 11:45 pm, 13-year-old Saith Mendez was gunned down at the 76 Gas Station at the 8800 Whittier Boulevard location. 

“Unprovoked, suspect Chavez drew a firearm, took several steps towards Saith, and shot him at close range,” L. A County Sheriff, Robert Luna, said. Saith had been waiting for his mother to finish her shift and stepped out of her vehicle to speak with her at her place of work. When he was returning to her car, he passed by Chavez, who was already lingering around the gas station, and shot him.

20-year-old Andres Adan Chavez has been charged with one count of murder with the special circumstance allegation of murder while lying in wait and one count of carrying an unregistered, loaded firearm.      

Currently, Chavez is facing the possibility of life in jail without parole if convicted of his crimes, and it has not been decided yet if he will receive the death penalty or not.
