Winter Formal prices causes controversy

Winter+Formal+prices+causes+controversy

Winter formal prices start at $90 without an ASB card this year. On January 9th-13th, prices are bumped to $95, and on January 17-27, they increase by $5, adding up to a $100 ticket. For a school dance, this is a lot of money.

According to PrepScholar, El Rancho High School has a “moderate percentage of students at or near poverty.” Charging up to $100 for a school dance ticket for people who may not be able to afford it can be seen as unreasonable and unfair.

La Serna High School’s Winter Ball Dance is $30 without an ASB card. La Serna High School also has a higher poverty level, according to PrepScholar.

While the memories made at the Winter Formal may be great, the high prices leave a dent in the fun times.

“I think the winter formal prices are a little bit too high, maybe $20 lower would be fine with me,” says Junior Cesar Gonzalez. “Hopefully the memories are well worth the money.” On the other hand, others don’t mind the high prices.

“I’m fine with spending $95.” says junior David Chipres, “You’re only in high school once, so might as well make the most out of it.”

Whether or not students like the prices, the school has to compensate for the money they spend on food, music, venues, etc.  Hopefully, the turnout is good and students have a fun time!
