Opinion: poetry is one of the best forms of expression

Skylar Becerril, El Rodeo Staff Writer

From Inaugural Poems to the songs we listen to, we can find poetry all around us. We just have to allow ourselves to see it.

Poetry can and has had a tremendous impact on our society. Still to this day, I believe poetry can impact lives in a positive and thought-provoking way that stems change between one another.

We see wars, fights, and prejudices that separate us and hold us back from truly understanding and being compassionate toward one another.

What if poetry is a way to communicate and bring about change in our mindsets?

Amanda Gorman is an American Poet and Activist and is the first National Youth Poet Laureate. Gorman recited her poem “The Hill We Climb” at President Biden’s inauguration.

This poem was fully finished shortly after the riot at the capital. It is about making America better through unity and collaboration. Her poetry is powerful and full of hope, sparking motivation for togetherness.

You can find poetry just by looking at the beautiful world God created alone through his word. Nature and all its beauty. People and all our uniqueness.

The first song that truly spoke to me as poetry was “Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman. This song paints a picture of two people in love trying to fly away. Metaphorically, they want to fly away but in reality, all they have is a fast car. Two people are giving backgrounds and raw emotions, that others may connect with in some way.

Poetry tells a story through thoughtful and fruitful words that carry more meaning for some than others.

This is what makes poetry so personal and convicting. The rhythms that are used in poems are intense and captivating. This is why many Musicians use the same elements for poetry in their songs.

Overall, this is why I believe poetry is one of the best ways to express yourself and make a change in our society.
