Matthew Eli Gonzales, a 17-year-old senior at El Rancho High School, is getting ready to take the next big step in his life after graduation. Like many seniors, he has spent the past year thinking about his future and what path he wants to follow. For Matthew, that decision became clear when he chose to attend UTI in Long Beach. Known for its hands-on programs and career focused training, the school stood out to him as the right place to start building his future.
When I asked Matthew how he feels about going to UTI in Long Beach, he shared his excitement and confidence about the decision. “I feel excited and a little nervous, but mostly ready to start something new,” he said. I also asked him why he decided to go there, and he explained, “What made me choose this school is because they offer really good programs and the school there is really nice and the people there are very kind.” It’s clear that Matthew is looking forward to being in an environment where he can learn practical skills and meet people who share similar goals.
Matthew’s friends have a lot to say about his next chapter as well. Many of them are proud and supportive, even though they know things will change after high school. One of his close friends said, “It’s kind of crazy that he’s leaving, but I know he’s going to do great things over there.” Another important part of this journey is that his friend Diego will also be attending UTI in Long Beach with him. Diego shared, “I’m excited that we get to go together. It makes the whole experience less stressful knowing I’ll have someone I know there.” Their friendship will continue as they both take on this new challenge side by side.
Before ending our conversation, I asked Matthew what advice he would give to incoming freshmen or underclassmen who are unsure about their future. He responded, “The advice I would give to the newcomers is that they should have fun and enjoy their high school years but also be on their work because it could catch up to them.” His words reflect both the importance of enjoying high school and staying focused. As Matthew gets ready to graduate and move on to UTI, he leaves behind not just memories, but also advice and inspiration for those who are still figuring out their own paths.
