Last Friday, seniors at El Rancho High School took part in the long-awaited tradition of Senior Ditch Day, choosing a variety of ways to spend their time away from campus. While classrooms sat unusually quiet, students across the community made the most of their day by relaxing, hanging out with friends and family, and enjoying activities that marked one of their final moments of high school freedom.
Some students used the day to unwind at home with friends. Ezekiel shared, “I went to my friend’s house to cook some steak, mac & cheese, and took a jump in the pool. I also went to play Pokémon Go with my family.” His day combined good food, fun, and time with loved ones, reflecting a balance between celebration and relaxation. Similarly, Brian spent his ditch day in a more low-key way, saying, “I stayed home all day and played video games with my buddies, even went to see my brother’s soccer game.” For Brian, the day was about enjoying simple pleasures and supporting family.
Others took advantage of the opportunity to go out and enjoy the Southern California weather. Jacob Garcia described a more adventurous outing: “I went to the beach with my big group of friends and had a great time swimming and cooking BBQ.” Beach trips are a popular choice for ditch day, offering students a chance to bond, take photos, and create lasting memories before graduation.
However, not every senior participated in ditch day. Isiah explained, “My parents did not let me ditch so I came to class where it ended up being very empty and in one class it was literally me and one other person.” His experience highlighted the stark contrast on campus, where attendance was minimal and the usual busy atmosphere was replaced with quiet classrooms. Whether students stayed home, went out, or came to school, Senior Ditch Day once again proved to be a memorable milestone for El Rancho’s graduating class.
