The El Rancho High School senior class is preparing to bid farewell to their classmates as the year ends. With nostalgia in the air, it’s only natural to reflect on this school’s history, as this is the 70th anniversary of the first graduating class at El Rancho.
El Rancho opened its doors in September 1952 with great excitement and anticipation. Many of its inaugural students transferred from Whittier High School, bringing a sense of community and shared history. Interestingly, the Whittier Union District was responsible for administering the school until 1962, when the El Rancho Unified School District was established, a significant milestone in our school’s journey toward independence and self-governance.
The first graduating class of 1954 played a pivotal role in establishing the traditions we hold dear today. Their contributions, which we continue to honor and cherish, paved the way for countless others to follow. This year, 2024, marks 70 years since that first graduation ceremony.
For students, high school is a significant chapter in their lives. It’s a time filled with events and activities that create lasting memories, such as news staff, Academic Decathlon, yearbook, pep rallies, Don Games, football games, and dances. These traditions, some of which date back to the school’s early years, are a testament to our shared history and the spirit of El Rancho High School.
El Rancho alumni Sandra Calvillo, class of 1993, says the school has always had a strong sense of blue pride. However, she has observed a noticeable decline in school spirit with the current generation of El Rancho students. As the former yearbook editor, Calvillo recalls her high school experience and unwavering love for the school. Her passion for El Rancho remains unwavering, as she cherishes her time as yearbook editor, capturing every moment at the school; from ASB, Don games, pep rallies, and football games, Calvillo was there. “It makes me sad not to see a pool, stadium, or band room anymore. I remember the class of ‘93 all waiting to sing the alma mater after the games, having so much pride for our school,” Calvillo said.
Alumni Ashley Madrid, class of 2015, says, “My pride for the school came from investing my time in sports.” Madrid actively participated in sports such as tennis, swimming, water polo, and track and field. Madrid fondly recalls being a good student and cherishing school events. She suggests making the most of your time at school since it’s a unique opportunity that comes only once in a lifetime, whether in sports, journalism, culinary arts, or any club that piques your interest.
El Rancho High School has undoubtedly come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1952. It has been unwavering in its pursuit of academic excellence and athletic prowess, achievements that continue to inspire us all. Today, we should stand proud of the legacy we have built, a testament to the hard work and dedication of all who have been part of this journey. As we look to the future, we are filled with hope and excitement for what is yet to come.
